about

Dawson City is the first single from my upcoming record Memory Forming Clouds. I wrote and recorded most of it in Fox Harbour, Nova Scotia, where I set up a temporary studio and lived for a month in the wake of my life in Toronto collapsing. A personal loss had kickstarted a dark year; I was at the end of a ten year relationship and the studio I worked at was destroyed in a flood. I wrote Dawson City about the unexpected feeling of needing to come home, just as uncertain as when you left.

lyrics

Dawson City

You were bumming ‘round
Dragging your aimless body in and out of town
Trying hard to be something no one needs
Heard the call of gold
Off in those distant mountains no one around you’d known
Threw your life in bags and hit that dirt road

How are you ever going to turn and face them now
Knowing what you know
With nowhere to go

It’s hard to face defeat
When your destination’s burning in the breeze
Grab a plume of smoke, ride it home
Floating through the clouds as you dissipate and rain ash on the ground
Knowing what you know
Nowhere to go

How are you ever going to turn and face them now
Having set out just to strike out
How are you ever going to turn and face them now
Knowing what you know
With nowhere to go

It’s the kind of town that will turn your beauty into a thorny crown
None like you aloud to wear it proud
I’m so sorry now for every time I was the weight that pulled you down
Just another man who tried to wear you around

How are you ever going to turn and face them now
Knowing what you know
With nowhere to go
How are you ever going to turn and face them now
Having set out just to strike out
Asking every stride
Was it determination, wanderlust, or pride?
Could you face yourself if you had not tried?
